Highlights

Recently Phillip von Zweck, host of Something Else wrote an open letter to the station's staff mailing list. Here is his question and the many replies he got back.

Dear station folk,

Maybe this is a dumb idea:

You know those pulse magazine "desert island lists" (if you could only listen to ten records for the rest of your life, what would they be?)? Well, sometimes there is a copy of Pulse around the station and I read it  and I think, I don't know these people, why should I care what their desert island ten is?

But WLUW folks, I'd be very curious to see what you would put on your lists.  I've got ideas for what would be on mine, and I'd be happy to forward should anyone be interested.

I'm not looking for some sort of  "best of 2001" or list of  "most important" or "most influential" albums,  just your downright favorite 10 records. I'm especially interested in what some other specialty shows would include: Hip Hop, Latin, New Orleans, Punk, jazz,etc. as I know that alot of the stuff on my list doesn't fit in with my show.

Thanks for humoring me,
Philip von Zweck

Cute Sarah
Questions like this put me in a love/hate relationship with my CD  collection, because the CDs I like best may not be striking or  important, or in some cases, not even the "best" by the artist in question, but they do mean the most to me and get listened to a lot.  Bear that in mind when you see that they're all recent, despite my love of the Beach Boys, Gram Parsons, and Chris Bell and all that...

That, and these change all the time.  This list was drastically different when I made it last year.  I guess that's a good thing, it means I'm growing.  Coz I eats me spinach.  ;)

But, disclaimer aside, here are my desert island top 10, in no particular order, for 9:30 PM on Tuesday, September 25, 2001.  Ask me again tomorrow.

[ The Pixies ] :: Surfer Rosa
[ Bright Eyes ] :: Fevers & Mirrors
[ Dismemberment Plan ] :: ...Is Terrified
[ Death Cab for Cutie ] :: Something About Airplanes
[ Jawbox ] :: Jawbox
[ The Blacks ] :: Dolly Horrorshow
[ Liz Phair ] :: Exile in Guyville
[ Joan of Arc ] :: How Memory Works
[ Matthew Sweet ] :: Girlfriend

...and since three EPs clock in at a total of 12 tracks, which to me
counts as one full album:
[ Les Savy Fav ] :: EMOR EP +
[ Pavement ] :: Shady Lane EP +
[ Promise Ring ] :: Boys and Girls EP

Heaviest rotation in my personal discman right now:
Ghosts & Vodka / C-Clamp / Dashboard Confessional / Onelinedrawing /
The new Dis. Plan / Bright Eyes Demos / Ryan Adams

xoxo your friendly neighborhood cute MD
Sarah's show is from 2pm to 4pm on Wednesdays.

Steve Damien
Hey all,
I had to really think about this. Ten records for the rest of my life?
I can only say the records that I can't live without now, and I'll report back 50 years from now and tell you if I was right.
No order:
David Bowie -Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust (72)  -what a concept
Cat Stevens - Mona Bone Jakon (70) -such a calming album
Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet (68) -the best, song after song
Brian Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain by Stategy (74) -so innovative
Beatles - White Album (68) -just a fun listen every time
Bob Dylan - Time out of mind (97) -so heartfelt and real
Electric Light Orchestra - Eldorado (74) - amazing arrangements
Nick Drake - Bryter Lyter (70) - such a pure talent
Buddy Guy - I was waliking thought the woods (74) - taught me what blues is
The Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground (69) - masterful songwriting
Catch Steve's retrospective show 6pm 10pm.

Ric, host of Sound of the Fury
Well, I suppose in order to further annoy the people who get the digest form of the e-mail I'll contribute.....but it's going to be hard to limit it to ten.
Metallica--Master of Puppets
Machine Head--Burn My Eyes
Fear Factory--Demanufacture
Megadeth--Capitol Punishment: The Megadeth Years
N.W.A.--Straight Outta Compton (didn't see that one coming, did you?)
The Doors--The Doors
Black Sabbath--Paranoid
Vio-Lence--Oppressing The Masses
Pantera--Cowboys From Hell
Motorhead--No Sleep Til Hammersmith
And then just to cheat I'd bring along a CD-R with a bunch of other bands.
The Sound of the Fury airs Tuesday morning fom 12am to 2am.

Richard Heath
My list is also not necessarily in order.  It also contains no indie selections.  Let the eye rolling begin!
Paul & Linda McCartney - "Ram"
The Monkees - "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, & Jones, Ltd."
Heart - "Dreamboat Annie"
The original studio recording of "Jesus Christ Superstar"
Bee Gees - "Main Course"
Klaatu - "Klaatu"
Rick Wakeman - "The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table"
These last 3 are greatest hits anthologies instead of bonafide "albums", but they're fun to listen to, so who cares.
Bread - "The Sound of Bread" (a KTEL collection - how gauche)
The Moody Blues - "This is the Moody Blues"
ABBA - "The Singles"

Carrie Weston
I have had to do this list before and it is SO FREAKING HARD! But I suppose if I were truthful and listed the ten albums I listen to ALL the time as opposed to the ten I think I should bring with me to a desert island (you know, rounded out in several genres, influential) then they are (drumroll please):
The Stone Roses * S/T
My Bloody Valentine * Loveless
The Orb * Live 93
Orbital * 2
Beastie Boys * Check Your Head
Unrest * Perfect Teeth
Jesus and Mary Chain * Psychocandy
Echo and The Bunnymen * Ocean Rain
Spiritualized * Lazer Guided Melodies
New Order * Substance (Well, I mean, if you want to be hard ass and say Best
Of records don't count, and why wouldn't they, I would say Power Corruption
and Lies)
All of this is kind of arbitrary. As our darling MD pointed out, this can change on a whim. I mean, only ten albums? Like I can't list Digable Planets * Blowout Comb, Gang Of Four * Entertainment, PJ Harvey * Rid Of Me, Yo La Tengo * Painful, Magnetic Fields * Get Lost, Led Zepplin * Like Their Entire Catalog, Aphex Twin * Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2, Guided By Voices * Bee Thousand, V/A Lonely Is An Eysore, or Fugazi * Everything They Have Ever Done??? That's ridiculous. Drat. I forgot the Smiths. Hatful of Hollow or The Queen Is Dead would do. Argh.
Catch Carrie on the air 2pm to 6pm on Tuesdays.

pixies - surfer rosa
the triffids - treeless plain
my dad is dead - the taller you are, the shorter you get
the smiths - meat is murder

man... the top five are easy, and then once you think of the last 5, you want
to add at least 5 more... hell, let's all get stranded on a desert island
together, so we can have a ton of good records (and 3 or 4 copies of surfer
rosa :)  ).
